Wu Xiao Kang is a fictional character created by
A Dose of Light to raise awareness for sufferers of schizophrenia.
He was a photographer with schizophrenia who committed suicide and his
last roll of film was released and shown in a gallery. Many were struck by these images - scenes from the mental hospital where he spent his last days.
When it was revealed that he is actually a fictional character, many were outraged, but there were others who saw the merits of the set up as an art construct. I belong to the latter camp.
I find it a subversive provocation on what truth means to us. What is truth and what are lies? Who decides? Why should it matter?
