The
Village Voice comments that Elizabeth Peyton, "despite her considerable talent, often comes off as a paparazza with a paintbrush." Well, I love her highly stylized, glamorous portraits which immortalize stars in languid poses and disconcerting stares. There's a melancholia in them that grips me, a vulnerability that Peyton senses and portrays. They all have that sense of fragile beauty that draws you in yet keeps you out.
A retrospective of her work is currently ongoing at the
New Museum, and although I very regrettably can't visit, I can, well, at least buy the accompanying catalogue from Amazon.

And although Peyton's work is obviously valued waaaay out of my budget, there are other artists offering these exquisite portraits of very beautiful and talented people.

LeesaLevaDefinitely, the above portraits are inspiration for me to really start exploring options like oils and gouache in my portraits.
